“The 51st special session of the capital's Maslikhat of the 5th calling has taken place in the Astana today. The appointment of the new Astana Akim (Mayor) was on the agenda. The people’s representatives unanimously supported the suggestion of the president to assign Adilbek Zhaksybekov as the new Akim of Astana,” the press office said.
“First of all I want to thank you for the trust. I also want to congratulate everyone on the flawless victory of the president in the election. We have enormous work ahead of us. As you know, the President has proposed five institutional reforms that we have to accomplish together. We must continue promoting the favourable image of the capital and implementing the programs proposed by the president,” Zhaksybekov said.
Adilbek Zhaksybekov was appointed the Akim of Astana on October 22, 2014. Before the appointment, Zhaksybekov was Kazakhstan's Secretary of the State. Between 2009 and 2014, he led the Ministry of Defense. In 2008-2009, Zhaksybekov worked as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Kazakhstan in Russia. Zhaksybekov was the Akim of Astana from 1997 to 2003. In 2003-2004, he was appointed the Minister of Industry and Trade of Kazakhstan.
