The decision to have Kazakh language shifting to the Latin alphabet has nothing to do with Ka-zakhstan’s political preferences, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev stated January 9.

“Some people groundlessly regard the decision as a sign of Kazakhstan’s political preferences changing. Nothing of the kind. Here I can definitely assert that the planned transit to the Latin alphabet is a much-needed way to develop and modernize the language. It’s no use looking for a black cat in the dark room if there has never been any cat (…)Let me remind that in the 1920ies and up to 1940ies Kazakh language relied on the Latin alphabet. Three out of the fifteen Soviet republics used the Latin alphabet in their respective languages up to the very collapse of the USSR”, the President said when rewarding outstanding literature and arts figures at his Almaty-based residence January 9.

President emphasized that the forthcoming transit of the language to the Latin alphabet will have a substantial impact on the Kazakh culture. “The transit should be well-thought-through and bal-anced (…) We should keep in mind that in the 20th century there was a huge layer of Kazakh lit-erature and science heritage shaped based on the Cyrillic alphabet. It is important the heritage isn’t lost for the generations to come. There will be an ad-hoc state-run Committee responsible for having the language shifting to the Latin alphabet”, President said.

Tengrinews.kz reported earlier that when speaking at a solemn meeting to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence December 14, President Nursultan Nazarbayev tasked the Government to start prep works to transit to the Latin alphabet by 2025.
