Men commit suicide 4 times more frequently than women in Kazakhstan

Men commit suicide 4 times more frequently than women in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Statistics Agency. Compared to 2010, the total number of suicides went 184 cases down and made 3,433 people (3,617 people in 2010). 1,650 people (1,721 people in 2010) committed suicide in cities and 1,783 people (1,896 people in 2010) died of suicide in rural areas, the Agency writes. “In 2011 the number of male suicides made 2,822 people (2,971 people in 2010), including 1,342 people (1,399 in 2010) in cities and 1,480 people (1.572 in 2010) in rural areas. The number of female suicides made 661 people (646 people in 2010), including 308 people (322 in 2010) in cities and 303 people (173 in 2010) in rural areas,” the press-service’s message states. The greatest shares of suicides were registered in East-Kazakhstan oblast (513 people vs 560 in 2010), Almaty oblast (390 people vs 392 in 2010), Karaganda oblast (398 people vs 454 in 2010) and Kostanai oblast (362 people vs 340 in 2010). The least numbers of suicides were committed in Kyzylodra oblast (52 people vs 59 in 2010), Mangistau oblast (58 people vs 68 in 2010) and Atyrau oblast (76 people vs 88 in 2010). Compared to 2010, the total number of suicides among children and young people (7-29 y.o.) went 111 cases down and made 1,174 people (1,286 people in 2010). “Distribution of suicides by age groups was as follows: 15-19 years (244 people vs 291 in 2010), 20-24 years (415 people vs 430 in 2010), 25-29 years (452 people vs 491 in 2010). These numbers include male suicides: 15-19 years (147 people vs 184 in 2010), 20-24 years (340 people vs 344 in 2010), 25-29 (387 people vs 414 in 2010). The statistics of female suicides in the age groups is as follows: 15-19 years (97 people vs 107 in 2010), 20-24 years (75 people vs 86 in 2010), 25-29 years (65 people vs 77 in 2010),” Kazakhstan Statistics Agency states.
