Two thirds of population in Kazakhstan would like to retire before the legal retirement age currently in effect, and hope that it will be lowered, Tengrinews.kz reports referring to the survey led by Mojazarplata.kz In the opinion of 69.1% of respondents the appropriate retirement age in Kazakhstan should be 55 years for women and 60 for men. The second largest group of respondents agree with current government policy: over 13% support the idea that women should retire at 58 and men at 63. There are some who believe that the retirement age for both genders in Kazakhstan should be made equal. 2.46% suggest women and men retire at 60, and 1.26% propose to raise the retirement age even further to 65. Among other answers were such as “The retirement age in Kazakhstan should depend on the person's occupation and should vary from 50 to 65 years of age.” This being said, some respondents noted that one should have full discretion to continue working or retire after reaching the retirement age. Nevertheless, there is a worldwide tendency of raising the retirement age. Along with the Western countries , Russia and Ukraine are considering a later retirement. Compared to a number of Western countries the citizens of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries are in a more advantageous position: the retirement age for women and men in Kazakhstan is 58 and 63 respectively, whereas their fellow-workers in Japan can only retire when turning 70.
