Tengrinews.kz — Aktau resident Kanat Abdiev has been cleaning trash from the bottom of the Caspian Sea for several years and filming the process on video, according to 24KZ.
The amateur diver goes out to the sea almost every day. Putting on his diving suit, he goes underwater. But beneath the sea’s surface, there is not only beauty, but also rubbish.
“When the waves rise, the wind carries trash from the shore deep into the sea. If it is not cleaned up in time, it can lead to serious consequences. I put the rubbish into bags, and on shore I take it to containers or transport it in my own car. I work not only within the city, but also outside it,” the man said.
The diver began filming underwater videos and posting them on social media to draw attention to the problem. He says people need to see how much waste the sea is hiding.
He brings up plastic, glass, bags, car tires, and scrap metal from the seabed. Once, he swam more than a kilometer underwater, collecting trash the entire time.
While Kanat holds underwater clean-up drives, other residents go out to clean the shore. Just recently, another community clean-up took place in Aktau as part of the “Taza Qazaqstan” campaign. Residents cleared several kilometers of coastline and took part in greening efforts.
