Tengrinews.kz – Lukla Airport in Nepal has once again been named one of the most dangerous in the world. According to reports, the ranking is due to its short runway, mountainous terrain, and unpredictable weather.

Why it is dangerous

According to Express Daily, Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, Nepal, is situated at an altitude of 2,844 meters. Flight operations are complicated by extreme runway parameters: it is only 20 meters wide and 527 meters long. For comparison, standard airports typically have runways approximately 3,000 meters in length.

Furthermore, the runway features a steep 12-percent incline, which helps aircraft decelerate more quickly during landing to ensure they stop before the pavement ends.

According to data from the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 56 fatalities and seven fatal accidents at the airport since 2004.

Flight challenges

Media reports highlight several factors that make takeoff and landing particularly difficult for pilots:

  • Thin air at high altitudes reduces engine power and wing lift;
  • The short runway leaves minimal margin for error when stopping the aircraft;
  • Himalayan weather can change in minutes—fog or snowstorms can suddenly force a landing to be aborted;
  • Flights are regularly canceled during the monsoon season.

Despite these challenges, the airport operates at maximum capacity on clear days, handling up to 50 flights per 24-hour period.

@trek_xplore #Lukla Airport, officially known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport (LUA), is a small but famous airport in Lukla, Nepal. It is the gateway for trekkers heading to Everest Base Camp and is known for its short, sloped runway and challenging weather conditions. Key Information: • Location: Lukla, Solukhumbu District, Nepal • Elevation: 2,845 meters (9,334 feet) above sea level • Runway: 527 meters (1,729 feet) long, with a 12% incline • Airport Type: Public • Operated by: Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal • Main Airlines: Tara Air, Summit Air, Sita Air • Destinations: Primarily Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport - KTM) and Ramechhap (Manthali Airport - RHP) Challenges: • Extreme Weather: Frequent fog, high winds, and sudden weather changes. • Short Runway: One of the shortest commercial runways in the world, requiring skilled pilots. • High Elevation: Aircraft performance is affected, and flights are often delayed or canceled. • No Night Flights: Operates only in daylight hours due to lack of advanced navigation aids. Alternatives: • Fly to Ramechhap (Manthali Airport) and take a shorter flight to Lukla. • Trek from Jiri or Salleri if flights are unavailable. Pilot certification requirements

Flights to Lukla are restricted to experienced pilots. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal enforces strict requirements:

  • A minimum of 100 Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) operations in their career;
  • At least one year of flying experience within Nepal;
  • At least 10 landings at Lukla under the supervision of an instructor.

If flights are canceled, tourists have few options: they can either fly to the nearby Manthali Airport in Ramechhap or trek to Lukla on foot from the villages of Jiri or Salleri.
