Tengrinews.kz – Hiking in the mountains has become increasingly popular among Almaty’s youth, often inspired by images on social media that portray it as a light and entertaining pastime. However, rescuers warn that such trips require serious preparation and should not be underestimated.

"A hike in the mountains is not easy"

Many young people head into the mountains expecting beautiful views and photos, yet overlook the reality of heavy backpacks, cold winds, fatigue, and health risks.

“The most important thing is to match your abilities with your ambitions. Tragedies in the mountains happen when people are not properly prepared for their chosen route,” said Damir Yermagambetov, acting head of the Department of Emergency Situations (DES).

He stressed that social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram play a major role in fueling the “mountain hiking trend”. Short clips often compress multi-day treks into 30 seconds, creating the illusion that the routes are simple and “light”.

According to him, young people who try to repeat such videos without proper training often get lost, exhausted, or suffer hypothermia — situations that can result in serious injuries or even death.

“The most memorable and useful hike is the one you return from alive, healthy, and in good spirits,” Yermagambetov added.

Rescuers noted that a single search operation can cost several million tenge.

In Almaty, two specialized rescue divisions operate in the mountains, supported by volunteers, trained climbers, skyrunners, and drone teams.

Since the beginning of 2025, 291 rescue operations have been carried out, saving 396 people, including 77 children. Ten people have died.

Authorities remind hikers to:

  • Avoid going alone and always notify relatives and emergency services (112) of your route.
  • Dress for cold and windy conditions, even in summer.
  • Carry essentials: warm clothes, a first aid kit, flashlight, power bank, thermos, food, and water.
  • Choose bright clothing for visibility.
  • Stick to your planned route and avoid trying to cover multiple locations in one day.

If you get lost, rescuers emphasize not to panic, share your location if possible, and stay where you are until help arrives.
