Tengrinews.kz - Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced he will not seek re-election as the head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the upcoming party elections this September, signaling an imminent change in leadership, citing NHK.

On August 14, at the press conference, Kishida stated that the upcoming elections need to demonstrate to the public that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will change. This requires fair elections and free debate. The first step indicating that the LDP will change is Kishida’s resignation as party leader.

His decision to quit followed a political scandal involving financing, in which LDP factions were implicated.

Recent opinion polls show that Kishida's approval rating is low.

Kishida assumed the role of Prime Minister in October 2021.

Fumio Kishida was supposed to visit Astana for the first summit “Central Asia + Japan”. But at the last moment his visit was canceled because of the earthquake in Japan.
