Tengrinews.kz – An 18-year-old foreign national was fined in Almaty International Airport after joking that he was carrying “an atomic bomb” in his luggage, police reported.
The incident occurred on September 2 at the international departures check-in counter, causing alarm among passengers and disrupting public order. Transport police said the man was charged with petty hooliganism and fined 20 MRP (78,640 tenge).
Authorities stressed that such jokes are not uncommon but can have serious consequences.
“Any attempt to destabilize the situation or intimidate people in transport facilities is treated as a serious threat,” the transport police said.
According to official data, 900 passengers have been removed from trains and planes in Kazakhstan since the beginning of the year for various offenses, most commonly alcohol consumption, public intoxication, minor hooliganism, and smoking in prohibited areas.
Police also reminded that under Article 273 of the Criminal Code, making a false terrorist threat is punishable by up to five years in prison, heavy fines, or community service. In the first half of 2025 alone, 20 cases of passengers uttering banned words such as “bomb” or “terrorist attack” were recorded at Astana Airport.
