Tengrinews.kz — Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed a meeting on the development of Alatau City. During the event, the President noted that infrastructure construction in Konaev is progressing slowly.
"However, I would like to draw attention to an existing problem. Infrastructure construction in Konaev is progressing at a slow pace. As they say, the city's appearance has not changed; everything remains the same. For the full development of the Almaty region, the city vitally and urgently needs basic infrastructure: educational, administrative, cultural, and sports facilities. Regional leadership must focus on this pressing issue," he said.
The Head of State also assessed the region's overall development pace during the meeting.
"Overall, the region's development pace is decent, and appropriate work is being carried out. The gross regional product at the end of 2025 amounted to 6.7 trillion tenge, a growth of 5.4 percent. For January–April 2026, the region ranks 5th according to the short-term economic indicator," Tokayev said.
The President noted that efforts to attract investment are actively underway. Since the beginning of the year, 266.2 billion tenge has been invested in the regional economy.
"Industrial production volumes have reached approximately 900 billion tenge. Meanwhile, the potential of the agricultural sector is underutilized. Based on the results of the first four months of this year, the physical volume index for agriculture, forestry, and fisheries stood at 101.2 percent," the Head of State emphasized.
The City of Konaev
The city of Konaev was formerly known as Kapshagay. On March 16, 2022, in his Address to the People of Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the division of the Almaty region and the creation of a new region – the Zhetysu region.
At that time, it was also revealed that Kapshagay would become the administrative center of the reorganized Almaty region, while Taldykorgan would serve as the center of the Zhetysu region.
On May 3, 2022, the President signed a decree, and Kapshagay was officially renamed Konaev. On May 4, the Head of State signed a resolution to relocate the administrative center of the Almaty region to the city of Konaev.
