Fines for producing low-quality goods may be increased 5-fold in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Minister of Industry and New Technologies Asset Issekeshev as saying to the parliament during presentation of the standardization draft law On amendment of several legislative acts on technical regulation and metrology. He noted that the fines for entrepreneurs who produce low-quality goods or goods harmful for people's health will be increased to 200 monthly calculation indexes (MCI) ($2,186). "Right now the penalties are too low. Anyone can violate the law without a significant responsibility. The fines will be increased to match the level of the penalties in Russia and Belarus. "Let's say an individual produces commodities that do not comply with the safety requirements. In such case the penalty will be 30 MCI ($328). Individual entrepreneurs will pay 50 MCI ($547) for the same violation and small and medium companies will be fined 100-200 MCI ($1,093 - $2,186). "We know that Russia is going to further raise the fines. That's why we suggest to gradually increase the penalties, too. In some cases it will be 2-3-5-fold increases. We will see during the year: if the manufacturers continue to produce low-quality commodities and the violations does not decrease after the fines go up, we might increase the fines significantly," Issekeshev said.
