Nazarbayev vetoed decision on impossibility of elections in Zhanaozen

Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev vetoed the decision of the Constitutional Council on impossibility of holding the elections in Zhanaozen, the President’s press-service writes. Nazarbayev considered the worries and concerns of Zhanaozen residents over their their voting rights provided by the Constitution and Kazakhstan laws being limited. “On January 10 the President made an objection to the Additional Decree of Kazakhstan Constitutional Council dated January 6 on impossibility of holding the Majilis and Maslikhat elections in Zhanaozen,” the message states. The decision of the Constitutional Council was based on the current legislation that prohibits elections in the areas with state of emergency regime in place. “The only purpose of this decision of the President to to provide Zhanaozen residents with an opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to elect and be elected to state and local authorities,” Kazakhstan President’s press-service notes. On January 6 the Constitutional Council announced its decision on impossibility of holding the elections in Zhanaozen on January 15 in relation to the state of emergency that is still in effect in the town. The Central Election Commission decreed to hold Maslikhat elections in Zhanaozen after the state of emergency is over, wereas the Majilis elections wouldn't have taken place in the town at all.
