Intentional wrench of information considered national security threat in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev has signed a law On National Security of Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the President’s administration. “The President signed the Law On National Security of Kazakhstan to improve the mechanism of ensuring national security,” the President’s website writes. The law was prepared upon the President’s instructions given at the meeting of the Security Council. One of the innovations of the law is that it defines information security treats. Article 15, Clause 6 of the law classifies “informational influence on public and individual conscience with the use of intentionally wrenched information and spreading of unreliable information in prejudice of national security” as a threat to the national security. The law also brings the issues of economic security to a new level. In particular, it defines a threat of loss of stability of the financial system. Types of national security were also reviewed in the new law. Political security has been defined in the law for the first time in Kazakhstan. It involves protection of the basics of the constitutional regime, the system of state authorities and the order of state management.
