Clashes in Zhanaozen are a local incident, there are no signs for so-called Arab Spring in Kazakhstan, Advisor to Kazakhstan President Yermukhamet Yertysbayev said. “My opinion has not changed: Arab revolution is impossible in Kazakhstan. It was a local conflict in a small town called Zhanaozen. I am deeply convinced that this (clashes) will not happen in a country-wire scale,” he told Interfax-Kazakhstan on December 20. Yertysbayev stressed that after Zhanaozen events the general situation in the country remains peaceful. “The whole country is absolutely peaceful. What happens in Zhanaozen is absolutely not natural for Kazakh mentality. Kazakhs never stood against the state, never. The main organizers of Zhanaozen clashes were the people who had recently received Kazakhstan citizenship: they came from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and did not fit well into Kazakhstan mentality,” Advisor noted. He expressed confidence that the riots like those in Zhanaozen will not spread to other regions. “I hope that this will not happen. This (labor conflict of oil workers) started this May and did not spread to any one regions during 7-8 months,” he said. Clashes in Zhanaozen happened during celebration of the Independence Day on December 16. The next day a large group of people blocked the railroad in Shetpe village of Mangistau oblast and set flames to a locomotive to support Zhanaozen riots. 1 person died and 10 were injured in Shetpe. Kazakhstan President announced state of emergency in Zhanaozen. According to investigation, the oil workers were initiators of the clashes.
