Combining Kazakhstan elections in 2012 helps save $30 million

Combining the elections to the Majilis (lower chamber of Parliament) and Maslikhat (local executive body) will save over 4 billion tenge ($27.2 million), Tengrinews.kz reports citing deputy chairman of Kazakhstan Central Election Commission Vladimir Foos. “The total costs of organizing and holding the election campaigns is 8.2 billion tenge, i.e. $55 million,” Foos said at a meeting on December 15, noting that combined elections will help save over 4 billion tenge ($27.2 million). According to Foos, 47 international observers (46 from the ODIHR/OSCE and 1 from the CIS observers mission) have been accredited so far. 1,127 observers were accredited for presidential elections in 2005, 1,129 observers attended Majilis elections in 2007, 1,029 international observers and 212 representatives of foreign media observed presidential elections of 2011. Accreditation of observers for the January 15 elections will finish on January 9, 2012.
