Kazakhstan diplomat Tolmachev cleared of criminal charges

Valery Tolmachev, a Kazakhstan diplomat who attempted to hijack a plane, has been cleared of criminal charges, Kazakhstan Permanent Representative to the UNESCO Olzhas Suleimenov told Tengrinews.kz. “Today he (Tolmachev) will be transferred from Naples to Rome. He was in the prison’s psychiatric hospital in Naples. He has been cleared of criminal liability. He will stay in a public hospital (in Rome) for about 3 months and then will go back to Almaty,” Suleimenov said on December 14. Valeriy Tolmachev was a member of Kazakhstan's permanent mission to UNESCO. During his flight from Paris to Rome in April 2011 he attempt to hijack a plane and divert it to Tripoli, Libya. The Alitalia plane crew managed to restrain him and he was detained by Italian police upon landing at the airport. in Italy for an attempt to hijack a plane. Examination confirmed that Valeriy Tolmachev was mentally ill and was not in control of his actions. Initially he was charged with abduction and a hijacking attempt, but the court ruled that he is mentally ill and dismissed the criminal charges. "The court has already ruled to clear him of the charges and all he has to do is to complete his course of treatment. His treatment in a public hospital at the cost of the Italian government will be completed in three months. Then he will return to Almaty and continue his therapy there," Kazakhstan's permanent envoy to UNESCO, Olzhas Suleimanov, is quoated as saying by RIA Novosti.
