Kyrgyzstan government banned import of radioactive coal from Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports. October 27 acting Prime-Minister of Kyrgyzstan Omyrbek Babanov instructed Kyrgyzstan's state customs service to ban import of coal from Kulandy mine of Zhambyl oblast, Kazakhstan. “Import of radioactive coal has to be banned. Additional radioactive pollution check-up of all cars and railroad transport shall be put in place as well,” Babanov noted. Besides, Energy Ministry, Kyrgyzxhilkommsoyuz state company and Power Stations company were instructed to return the customs cleared coal to Kazakhstan and terminate coal supply contract with Kulandy mine “for radiation background exceeding standards." The scandal over radioactive coal emerged in Kyrgyzstan a week ago over 8 thousand tons of coal from Kazakhstan with radiation level 2-8 times exceeding the standards. Kyrgyzstan deputy Raikan Tologonov said that import of radioactive coal to Bishkek power plant from Kazakhstan is lobbied by assistant speaker of the parliament Akhmatbek Keldibekov. This statement was later confuted. Kazakhstan mine was also checked and no radiation was discovered.
