Kazakhstan and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are discussing interaction related to low-enriched uranium, Novosti Kazakhstan quoted IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano as saying October 12. “Consequently, Kazakhstan and the Agency are working to put in place all the required facilities in Kazakhstan”, Yukiya Amano said when speaking at the International Nuclear-Free World Forum in Astana October 12. “We are working to strengthen nuclear safety and security in Kazakhstan (…) the nation to accommodate low-enriched uranium is yet to be defined. We are studying Kazakhstan’s suggestion to host a bank of low-enriched uranium from the technical perspective (…) We hope to be able to announce our decision in the nearest future. We need to formalize the agreement with the would-be host country. To purchase and get low-enriched uranium stored takes time. It will take 2-3 months. It is the first time IAEA is working on launching a bank of low-enriched uranium. We should make sure everything is done at the due level”.
