The world is not secured from a new threat, nuclear terrorism, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev said at the high-level meeting during the 66th session of the UN General Assembly on September 22, Tengrinews.kz reports. “Fortunately, the world has not faced the problem of nuclear terrorism yet. But we are practically not secured from such threat. High risks of uncontrolled spread of the nuclear threat are possibly related to participants of the black market of nuclear technologies. The solution is not in revision of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but in its observance by participating countries. The most important task on the way to nuclear-free world is a search for new approaches to nuclear security. I think that it is extremely important to bring international legal regulations to compliance with the realities of de-facto nuclear states,” Kazakhstan President said. Nazarbayev told other presidents that nuclear security has become one of the most important topics in his presidential activity. “I view nuclear security as a triunity: first, there is a military-political aspect of the problem, protection of the population from nuclear weapons; second, is countering potential nuclear terrorism; the third aspect is security of nuclear energy. Our position is stable in terms of the first issue: strive towards nuclear-free world is a historical goal of the humanity. Conventions obliging nuclear states to not use and not threaten non-nuclear states have to be signed in the nearest time,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said.
