509 students enrolled at Nazarbayev University this year

509 students have been enrolled at Nazarbayev University this year, Tengrinews.kz reports. University management announced results of the first year of work and shared its plans at the press-conference on August 23. All the enrolled students will take a preparatory course called Foundation. This course is free of charge. According to deputy chairman of the university’s Executive Board Kadisha Dairova, the competition was high: more than eight people for one place. Students who already finished the Foundation course have been divided into schools. The most popular school is the school of science and technology, second popular school is social and liberal arts school. Engineering school is at the third place. The total of 469 students will continue their second-year education. According to Vice-Rector of Nazarbayev University for education and science Ann Lonsdale, results of the first year are impressive. 32 students finished the Foundation course with excellent grades, while 65 percent received achievement certificates. “Our students are very talented, they strive for new knowledge, they are very ambitious and curious. I would like to note that Kazakhstan has the biggest treasure, which is its young people,” Ann Lonsdale said. Over 40 new professors were hired to teach at the University. Five of them are Kazakhstan professors with impressive background in the best universities in Japan, Canada and the U.S.. Selection criteria for the new professors were work experience, academic achievements and scientific-research work. The University’s plan for 2012 is to start enrolling students on commercial basis. Students from other Kazakhstan and foreign universities will be able to transfer to Nazarbayev University. University is also planning to develop a tuition system for international students.
