Kazakh alpinist Maksut Zhumayev told Tengrinews.kz that the International Expedition to K2 mount, also known as Chogori, has successfully topped a 4700m mountain pass. On June 23 the climbers stopped for the night at the height of 4500m right before the pass. On June 24 the expedition topped the pass and descended into the valley of the Shaksgam River, Zhumayev said. “We stopped at 3700m. This is the same altitude as the one our K2 base camp is located at. On June 26 we are planning to reach the base camp,” Zhumayev said. The goal of the expedition is to ascent the most northern eight-thousander: the 8611 meter tall Chogori. It is located in the Karakorum mountain range in Kashmir province (at the border between Pakistan and China). This is the sixth attempt to ascent K2 for Zhumayev.
