Six construction workers have fallen 20 meters from a building in Astana, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of the city’s Emergency Department.
The incident occurred on July 13 at the construction site of Barys-Arena Multifunctional Ice Palace that will be the home arena for Kazakhstan's Barys hockey team based in Astana.
The general contractor of the project is Mabetex Group construction company that has done a lot of ranking construction projects in Kazakhstan's capital. Among their most prominent projects in Astana are Kazakhstan's Presidential Residence, Astana Opera House, Kazakhstan Concert Hall and Saryarka Cycling Track.
“Today (on July 13) at 11.04 a.m. six construction workers have fallen from a 20 meters height when dismantling a scaffolding at the construction site of the Multifunctional Ice Palace on Turan Avenue in Yesil district. Three of them suffered fatal injuries, the other three were taken to the hospital,” head of the press office of the Emergency Department of Astana Ayagoz Fazylova said.
One of the three workers died at the hospital the next day, Deputy Head of the Office for Labor Inspection Kairat Iskakov said.
"Last night the fourth worker died of injuries in the intensive care department. He was in critical condition. As for the other two, they got severe injuries but their lives are no longer in danger," Iskakov said.
The identities of all six workers have been established - all of them are citizens of Kosovo, he said.
A special commission consisting of representatives of Mabetex Group administrative and construction departments along with Astana city's labor inspection are investigating into the details of the incident. The investigation will be completed within 10 days.
“I instructed the construction company to notify the families, compensate for the damages and cover all transportation and funeral expenses. They are obliged to do this all by law,” Iskakov added.
