An explosion in a mine in Satpayev town of Karaganda Oblast in central Kazakhstan has claimed the life of a young miner, Tengrinews reports.

The explosion occurred on Tuesday morning (November 4) in South Zhezkazgan mine of KAZ Minerals company (former Kazakhmys) at the depth of 140 meters. A 23-year-old miner died at the spot and another 45-year-old worker was hospitalized with various injuries.

“We do not know all the details of the accident. The commission is working at the site now. What we know is that the explosion occurred during planting of explosives for a blasting operation,” the administration of the mine said on the phone.

A criminal case was opened under the Article 246 of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan - Violation of the safety rules at explosion-hazardous facilities or in explosion-hazardous workshops resulting in the death of a person or other serious consequences.

A special commission was formed to investigate the accident. The preliminary cause so far is a spontaneous detonation of explosives that the miners were planting in the mine for blasting.
