Kazakhstan Senate elections set for August 19

According to the decree of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan Parliamentary elections will be held on August 19, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing official press. According to the election law, nomination of candidate Senators starts from the day following the date of the appointment of the elections and finishes one month before the elections day. Candidates are put forth at the sessions of oblast, regional and city Maslikhats (local representative bodies). Political parties and social unions file their nominees for the Senate seats through their representatives in Maslikhats. One candidate may be nominated by several Maslikhats. Self-nominated candidates are also allowed. Senators are elected by the electors: Kazakh citizens who are Maslikhats deputies. All the electors have equal rights and each of them has only one vote. The Senate includes 47 deputies. 32 of them are elected by electors from each of the 16 regions of the country (14 oblasts plus Astana and Almaty cities), while 15 of them are appointed by the President. Senators are elected for the term of six years. Half of the Senate is re-elected every three years.
