Kashagan consortium gets oil spill response base

NCPOC has rented a an ecological base for oil spills response at the Caspian Sea, Tengrinews reports citing the company's press-service. NCOC (North Caspian Operating Company) and its agent company NCPOC (NC Production Operations Company) in cooperation with KMG-Transcaspian held an official ceremony to unveil the base. "The base will supplement the consortium's main arsenal for liquidation of oil spills located at offshore facilities and Bautino Base. But of course, our ultimate task is to avoid the oil spills altogether. The equipment for liquidation of oil spills in shallow waters is currently based at and operated from a river port in Atyrau. The use of the new base’s equipment will start in the first quarter of 2014 after the freeze up period," the press-service quotes NCPOC Managing Director Arjan van Dijk as saying. The press-service assures that the Kashagan consortium has all the necessary equipment and skills to promptly and effectively react to any possible industrial accidents. More than 2 thousand people have been trained in prevention and liquidation of oil spill. Besides, the drills are being regularly held together with the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan. "All the interested parties will continue working to ensure environmental and industrial safety in the waters of the Caspian Sea, and the newly constructed base will strengthen of operational capacities," deputy chairman of KazMunaiGaz Kazakhstan national company Nurtas Shmanov said in his speech at the ceremony.
