Starting from July 1, 2011 customs duties on foreign vehicles imported to Kazakhstani will be levied in accordance with duty rates accepted in the Customs Union of Kazakhstani, Russia and Belarus, Bakhyt Tynysbekov, Head of Customs Control Department for Almaty, told journalists June 8. For previously-owned vehicles of 5 years old and older, the duty rate will be Euro 4 per cubic centimeter for engines of 1800-3000 cubic centimeters. Consequently, customs duty on an engine of 3000 cubic centimeters will make up Euro 12 000, with VAT standing at 12%. For cars of 5 years old and older with an engine of over 3000 cubic centimeters, the duty rate will stand at Euro 5.8 per cubic centimeter. Consequently, customs duty on an engine of 4000 cubic centimeters will make up Euro 23 000, with VAT standing at 12%. Before July 1, customs duties made up Euro 0.35-0.6 per cubic centimeters, depending on the engine. Customs duty on a Toyota Camry made in 2007 with an engine of 1800 cubic centimeters used to make up $1035, now it will cost $7476. Customs duty on a Toyota Camry with an engine of 2400 cubic centimeters stood at $1380, whereas the new figure will make up $9785. Those who prefer a Toyota Prado with an engine of 4000 cubic centimeters will have to pay a duty of $24 556 starting from July 1. Those who are lucky enough to clear customs before July 1 will only have to pay $3452. Earlier Tengrinews.kz reported that the situation at Baltic and Chinese customs points was critical because of excessive numbers of cars destined for import to Kazakhstan. Buyers are unable to get their cars through the customs at old customs tax rates. Kazakhstan has no plans of prolonging “the old” customs tax rates on import of previously owned cars for individuals.
