Tengrinews.kz - A new leader of the Palestinian Hamas movement has been announced after the death of its head Yahya Sinwar, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The former leader of the group died in October 2024 in a shootout with the Israel Defense Forces in the southern Gaza Strip. According to the media, the new leader is his younger brother, Mohammed Sinwar, who is actively working to restore Hamas' combat capabilities and manages all processes in Gaza.
Mohammed Sinwar, who is about 50 years old, led a more secretive lifestyle compared to his brother Yahya. He is known for his close relationship with the head of the military wing of Hamas, Mohammed Deif. Unlike Yahya, who spent more than 20 years in an Israeli prison, Mohammed mostly remained in the shadows, earning the nickname Shadow.
Now that the war has left Hamas with some 17,000 fighters and much of its structure dead, the organization still controls large parts of Gaza and continues to recruit new fighters, according to Israeli and Arab officials. In recent months, Hamas has mobilized several hundred new fighters who carry out attacks using guns and anti-tank weapons. Despite their inexperience, these fighters continue to threaten Israel.
Despite international pressure to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, Hamas continues to interfere with its distribution, making the situation worse.
The mobilization of new fighters by Hamas continues to prolong the war that began with the attacks on October 7, 2023. The war has already claimed thousands of lives and is making it difficult to resolve issues of hostage release and a ceasefire.
Mohammed Sinwar is also actively pressing the mediators to reach a comprehensive agreement that will end the suffering of the Gazans and justify their sacrifices. While Israel insists on destroying Hamas, the conflict remains a stalemate, delaying prospects for peace in the region.
Previously, Yahya Sinwar was reported to be killed by the Israel Defense Forces during an operation in the southern Gaza Strip.
