The European Commission, the executive body of the European Union responsible for proposing legislation, implementing decisions, upholding the EU treaties and managing the day-to-day business of the EU, has renewed the so-called list of airlines banned from performing flights to the EU. The black list contains all Kazakhstan-based companies except Air Astana National Airlines.
“Today the EC has renewed the list of airlines to be banned from flying to the EU or to be restricted in their operations in the EU”, the statement reads.
According to the EC, Air Astana is eligible to perform flights to Europe only when using certain types of aircraft. The statement didn’t specify the types of the aircraft.
The black list also includes all the airlines based in the neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
The EC has been renewing the black list every three months since 2006. As of today the list comprises 310 airlines based in 21 countries.
Incorporated in 2011, Air Astana is the only IOSA registered airline in Kazakhstan. Today Air Astana operates a fleet of 30 western aircraft with an average age of 5.8 years. It operates over 60 domestic and international routes. Its passengers are served by more than 4,300 highly qualified staff, the majority of whom are from Kazakhstan, supplemented by experienced foreign personnel. Air Astana has purchase orders in place for Boeing 787, Boeing 767, Airbus A320 and Embraer 190 family aircraft. These will expand the fleet to 36 aircraft by the end of 2017, and to 43 aircraft by 2020.
