Azimova thanked commission members for their work and outlined the next steps in preparing the new Constitution.

“The draft of the new Constitution will be published on the official resources of the Constitutional Court and on social media, including a dedicated Telegram channel,” Azimova said.

She added that the Commission’s results will be presented to the President.

Earlier, the chair of the Constitutional Commission proposed putting the revised draft of the new Constitution to a nationwide referendum.

What the draft contains

On January 31, the contents of the draft new Constitution were published. The document was previously presented by Bakyt Nurmukhanov, Deputy Chair of the Constitutional Court.

The draft consists of a preamble, 11 sections, and 95 articles.

According to a publication on the Constitutional Court’s website, the new preamble for the first time declares human rights and freedoms as the state’s top priority. Unity and solidarity, as well as interethnic and interfaith harmony, are defined as the foundation of Kazakhstan’s statehood.

It also states that the people of Kazakhstan are the only source of state power and the bearer of sovereignty.
