Tengrinews.kz - Residents of the mining settlement Maikain in Pavlodar region felt underground tremors, the same area where, in January last year, a bus with four mine rescuers sank into the ground following the collapse of an old mine.
According to the regional Department of Emergency Situations (DES), the report was received on January 9 at 9:55 AM.
"Residents reported feeling ground vibrations. Upon investigation, the coordinates provided by the Kazakh National Seismology Center were checked. It was determined that the geolocation corresponds to a steppe area 15 kilometers from Maikain. An inspection confirmed no signs of destruction or consequences. It was also established that blasting operations conducted by Maikainzoloto LLP took place on January 8, with the danger zone radius being insufficient to cause such effects," the department's press service stated.
The Bayanaul District Akimat (local government administration) confirmed that no damage was detected. Seismologists, who recorded the ground tremors, reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 1. The tremors were recorded at 6:44 AM.
Meanwhile, residents of the settlement stated that the underground tremors were quite strong.
"The rumble was the same as last year when the old mine collapsed, and a bus with our mine rescuers fell into the sinkhole. It happened at 6:46 AM, and the shaking was intense—we thought something exploded at the mine. People in the neighboring village of Ushkulyn also heard it. But it shook hard here. In the morning, we learned it was an earthquake," they said.
The strongest tremors were felt by residents of the old "Shanghai" neighborhood, which is closest to the gold-bearing mine.
