Tengrinews.kz — The Prosecutor General's Office has warned Kazakhstanis about a new online fraud scheme involving fake iPhone purchase notifications through the PayPal payment system.

"You purchased an iPhone"

According to the center for forecasting criminal threats and public safety risks of the Prosecutor General's Office Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Records, users are receiving emails claiming an iPhone purchase has been made. The notification urges the recipient to cancel the transaction immediately. To do this, the scammers provide a "support service" phone number.

"Such emails appear highly authentic as the scammers use the address appleid@id.apple.com and spoof the message content," the statement reads.

How the scammers operate

During the call, the perpetrators report an alleged Apple ID hack and attempt to convince the user of the urgent need to secure their account.

They then:

  • suggest installing remote access software;
  • request passwords and other confidential data;
  • create a sense of urgency and threat to account security.

Security recommendations

Experts recommend not clicking on links in such emails or calling the numbers provided. Purchases should only be verified through official Apple and PayPal services.

Additionally, users should not install third-party software at the request of unknown individuals. To protect accounts, it is recommended to enable two-factor authentication.

Upon receiving suspicious notifications, users are advised to contact official service support and report fraud incidents to law enforcement.
