Tengrinews.kz - Recently, social media pages and local press discussed reports that a passenger cut his own throat in one of the restrooms at Almaty Airport. Tengrinews.kz spoke with an eyewitness who shared details of what happened.
The incident took place on August 29. At the time, the Almaty Airport press service commented on the situation, stating that “a passenger attempted to cause physical harm to himself in a restroom in Terminal T1 for domestic flights.”
Talgat, who was at the airport that day, recalled that he had only stepped into the restroom for a few minutes.
“It happened in the men’s restroom in the domestic departures area. I was on my way to my flight and went inside. I saw shards of glass with blood on the floor, and there was blood on the tiles too. From behind a stall door, I could hear wheezing. I went to look for help, but there was no one nearby. I approached a staff member at passenger and baggage control and asked them to check what was happening,” he said.
Talgat emphasized that he could not simply walk past that day.
“Did I save him? I probably won’t claim that or take on the role of a hero. Anyone could have done the same in that situation — if they wanted to. You just can’t walk by. You need to pay attention to what’s happening around you,” he explained.
However, the man noted that what troubled him most was another issue.
Earlier, the transport police department had reported that for unknown reasons the injured man never boarded his plane and instead spent about four hours in the waiting area, including a cafe.
“He didn’t fly, even though he had checked in. He didn’t show up for boarding, and apparently the security service didn’t look for him. He spent four hours in the secure area of the terminal. But it seems that no one asked the question — why? It’s important to get an answer to that,” Talgat stressed.
