Tengrinews.kz — Local residents in the Bayanaul District of Pavlodar Region rescued a pair of swans that were close to dying on the ice-covered small lake Tulusor. A video of the rescue, posted on Instagram, went viral.

The footage was shared by Birlik village resident Baurjan Jakupov. According to him, he and his father first noticed a single swan on the frozen lake.

The video shows the exhausted bird being lifted from the ice and seemingly hugging its rescuer around the neck in gratitude. At that moment, the father and son spotted another swan on the lake and rushed to help it as well.

It turned out that the second bird had become frozen into the ice by its feathers. The young man carefully freed it from the icy trap and then carried both birds to their car.

“Most likely, due to sudden weather changes, the swans did not manage to fly away before the frost. During the day there was a thaw, but at night the lake froze, and the weakened female became trapped in the ice. The male did not abandon her — true swan loyalty. On Wednesday, Baurzhan will take both birds to a veterinary clinic in Pavlodar, where they will be examined by ornithologists,” said Azhdar Zhusupov, head of the Pavlodar Institution for Forest and Wildlife Protection.

Baurzhan placed the rescued swan pair in a temporary shelter. According to him, the female has slightly frostbitten feet, while the male was simply exhausted.

“I heat the stove for them myself. The female has already started standing up, but she still can’t stand for long. The male has recovered. When we saw them on the lake, he was also lying on the ice but managed to get up — probably to call for help. They eat well. On the first day, we fed them baby food, and now we’re adding crushed oats and wheat. We’ll treat them, nurse them back to health, and release them into the wild in spring,” Baurjan Jakupov told Tengrinews.kz.

The young man writes poetry, composes music, and has already recorded several videos with the swans. The rescue video has garnered nearly 200,000 views and more than 15,000 comments. Touched Kazakhstanis are thanking the men for their compassion and help for the birds.

“Thank you for not passing by,” “Good will return as good,” “These birds will bring you happiness,” people wrote in the comments.
