According to the Turkic Academy, the third meeting of the commission on the unified Turkic alphabet, established by the Organization of Turkic States, took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from September 9 to 11.

The main goal of the meeting was to finalize the project of a unified alphabet for Turkic languages, utilizing accumulated knowledge and the two-year experience of the commission, as stated in the press release.

Participants reviewed the Latin-based Turkic alphabet project initially proposed by scholars in 1991.

“The commission conducted detailed discussions and identified aspects requiring refinement in the proposed alphabet project. As a result of this meticulous work, a proposal for a unified Turkic alphabet consisting of 34 letters was agreed upon,” the statement reads.

It is noted that each letter of the proposed alphabet represents different phonetic sounds found in Turkic languages.

“The successful conclusion of this meeting is of historic significance. The development of a unified Turkic alphabet promotes mutual understanding and cooperation among Turkic peoples while preserving their linguistic heritage,” emphasizes the Turkic Academy.

The event organizers called on relevant institutions to provide "effective support in implementing the proposed unified Turkic alphabet."

The Turkic Academy is an international organization established under the auspices of the Organization of Turkic States, which promotes scientific and educational collaboration among Turkic countries and regions. The academy includes four member states - Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkey - along with two observers, Hungary and Uzbekistan. Its headquarters is located in Astana.
