Tengrinews.kz - Speaking at the ceremonial awarding of state honors on the occasion of Republic Day, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev commented on the results of the referendum regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant, according to a message from Akorda.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that large-scale political transformations have set a new vector for the democratic development of the state. The constitutional reform has restructured key institutions of power, creating a stable political system based on openness, justice, efficiency, and serving the people rather than a narrow group. He noted that these values have led to fundamental shifts in the socio-political landscape.
"A vivid testament to this is the recent referendum on the construction of the nuclear power plant. More than 70 percent of citizens voted in favor of building the plant. This decision confirmed that in crucial situations, our nation chooses progress. One of the key tenets of our state policy is 'diverse opinions - one nation.' Overall, the issue of growing energy shortages is extremely relevant for our country. If not addressed in a timely manner, it will hinder the development of our economy and lower the quality of life for citizens," he said.
Recall that the referendum on the nuclear power plant took place on Sunday, October 6, from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. According to the final results, 5,561,937 citizens, or 71.12 percent, voted in favor.
In the referendum, Kazakhstanis were asked, "Do you agree with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan?" The two possible answers are: "Yes, I agree" or "No, I do not agree."
