Tengrinews.kz - Kazakhstan has begun preparations to construct airports in the resort areas of Katon-Karagai, Zaisan, and Kenderli, which will link these regions with Astana and Almaty.
According to the Civil Aviation Committee in response to an official inquiry, sites for the airport projects in the three resort zones have already been selected.
"In Zaisan, the airport will be located at the former Satpayev military airfield, 25 kilometers from Zaisan city. In the Katon-Karagai district, a new airport will be built between the villages of Katon-Karagai and Ulken Naryn, near the village of Soldatovo, 38 kilometers from Katon-Karagai," the committee reported.
Construction of the Kenderli airport is planned 13 kilometers from the Kenderli resort area.
"Initially, a 2,200-meter runway with a width of 35 meters will be built for Q400 aircraft. If demand increases, the runway can be extended to 2,600 meters with a width of 45 meters to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737," the committee added.
Construction of the three airports is set to begin in 2025 to establish air connections between Astana, Almaty, and the region's tourist areas.
"The construction cost will be determined after project documentation is developed," noted the Civil Aviation Committee.
In December 2023, the Minister of Transport announced plans to build new airports in Kazakhstan, with an estimated cost of 10 billion tenge each for airports in Karkaraly and Ulytau, 16 billion in Zaisan, and 23.2 billion in Katon-Karagai.
Earlier, the City Transportation Systems announced the completion of the cable-stayed LRT (light rail transit) bridge over the Esil River.
