Tengrinews.kz — Construction of a road to Burkhan-Bulak, the tallest waterfall in Kazakhstan, has begun in the Zhetysu region. We learned the details from the regional akimat.
For now, Burkhan-Bulak is accessible only to the most patient travelers: after the off-road section, tourists have to continue on foot. The akimat reported that work has begun to improve access and conditions for visitors.
“Drilling and blasting operations are being carried out at the site, the area is being cleared of natural soil, and the roadbed foundation is being prepared. A total of 2.8 kilometers of roadbed foundation made of crushed stone and sand mixture has already been laid,” the akimat said.
In total, about 30 kilometers of road are planned to be built.
“The total cost, according to the contract, amounts to 13.8 billion tenge. In 2025, 3.9 billion tenge was allocated and utilized from the National Fund for the start of construction work, and for 2026, 1 billion tenge has been allocated from the local budget. The length of the road is 30.8 kilometers. The general contractor is Progress KZ LLP,” the Zhetysu akimat said.
Will there be a tourist zone
A recreation area with gazebos and sanitary facilities is planned near the waterfall. Parking areas are also предусмотрены, and after the completion of the main work, the authorities intend to attract investors. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Burkhan-Bulak is the tallest waterfall in Kazakhstan, with a total height of 168 meters. It is located in the gorge of the Kora River in the Dzungarian Alatau mountains, Eskeldinsky district, 70 kilometers from the city of Tekeli and about 130 kilometers from Taldykorgan.
