Tengrinews.kz - Marwell Wildlife and the University of Southampton have created drones to monitor endangered species in the wild. The technology is planned to be used on snow leopards in Altyn-Emel National Park, according to Daily Mail.

Zoologists at Marwell Zoo have developed drones with thermal imaging and artificial intelligence to identify each animal by its unique fur. The aircraft can capture veins in an animal's ear from 120 meters above ground.

Field tests have already shown that the technology can capture important images in enough detail that the animal does not need to be disturbed.

The drones will be used by Hampshire Zoo to monitor snow leopards and other endangered species, and can also scan zebras like barcodes to identify individual zebras in a herd.

"The project - carried out by Marwell Wildlife and the University of Southampton - will begin by watching snow leopards in Altyn-Emel National Park in Kazakhstan and Grevy's zebra in Kenya," the publication says.

According to Professor Philip Riordan, director of conservation at Marwell Wildlife, the project will promote innovations "that can help conservationists around the world."

Earlier, a snow leopard, showing a lively interest in a camera and carefully studying it, was captured on video in the Katon-Karagai State National Natural Park.
