Tengrinews.kz – Seismologists are preparing a forecast regarding possible aftershocks in Almaty, the city’s Emergency Department (DES) reported.
“A meeting of the Scientific Seismology Center’s commission is underway regarding potential repeat tremors. Once concluded, seismologists will present the findings of the forecasting commission,” the statement said.
Authorities added that, in accordance with the earthquake response protocol, all relevant state bodies have been notified, and monitoring is being carried out to check for damage, destruction, and the functioning of vital infrastructure facilities.
No reports of damage have been received on the 112 emergency line, the Almaty DES noted.
Earlier, residents of Almaty felt noticeable tremors: walls and chandeliers in apartments shook slightly, people began messaging one another, and many—especially those living in high-rise buildings—went outside for safety.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the earthquake was recorded at 12:44 PM on December 4 by the national network of seismic stations. The epicenter was located 277 kilometers southeast of Almaty on the territory of China. The magnitude was 6.7.
In Almaty, the quake was felt with an intensity of 3 points.
