Earlier, it became known about four earthquakes that were felt in Almaty, the Almaty region, and the Zhetysu region. According to the seismologist, the earthquake that occurred in Almaty on November 5 and the aftershocks that reached the region earlier indicate that seismic activity is taking place in the south.
"I am not saying that it will necessarily lead to some kind of earthquake that is dangerous for Almaty. But there is such a thing that Tibet and the Tarim Plate continue to press on the Tien Shan. There is also the Indian Plate - it presses. There is noticeable pressure on us from the south," Khaidarov said.
He also explained why not all residents of Almaty and the region felt the tremors.
"Firstly, the earthquake was very weak. Secondly, each building has its own frequency, which may or may not coincide with the radiation of the earthquake source. It also matters what position a person was in at the time of the tremors. If he, for example, was walking from room to room, he might not have felt it, but if he was lying or sitting, he might have felt it. In the description of a 3-point earthquake, it is written that approximately 30-40 percent feel it," the expert concluded.
Recall that on November 5 at 10:01 a.m. Astana time, an earthquake occurred in the Almaty region and Almaty city. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Kazakhstan, 33 kilometers east of Almaty.
The Department of Emergency Situations of Almaty explained why the public alert system did not activate during the earthquake.
