Tengrinews.kz - Vice Minister of Health Yerzhan Nurlybayev commented on the risks of a potential outbreak of monkeypox in Kazakhstan.

According to the vice minister, the likelihood of such an outbreak is minimal.

He noted that monkeypox is a rare infectious disease characterized by fever, general intoxication, and redness. Since the first outbreak was reported in May 2022, around 99,000 cases have been confirmed, with 189 fatalities.

According to the ministry, the endemic countries are Ghana, Congo, Cameroon, Liberia, Nigeria, and the Central African Republic.

"Currently, the situation is stable, with no infections reported. Risks are being assessed, and monitoring is ongoing for arrivals from countries with registered cases. The list of such countries is updated regularly," the vice minister said.

According to scientists, the contagiousness of this infection is low. The Ministry of Healthcare is keeping the situation under constant control.

"The likelihood of an outbreak in Kazakhstan is minimal, but the ministry has intensified border control, prepared medical services, and stockpiled medicines. Healthcare workers are being trained in diagnosis and treatment methods, and an emergency response plan has been developed," concluded Yerzhan Nurlybayev.
