More and more people become fond of drag racing in Almaty. The number of participants of car races have grown four times since the beginning of the year, Tengrinews.kz reports citing organizers of races held at the territory of Boralday airport every Friday. Only 30-40 racers took part in Friday races in the beginning of 2011, while currently the number of people willing to test their cars or compete with their friends has increased to 120. Besides, the number of spectators is also increasing with every race. According to the organizers, up to 1,000 people come to watch the races sometimes. Drag-racing is a competition in which specially-equipped cars compete two at a time to cross the set finish line first and be the fastest to cover a measured distance, most commonly 402 m. The first stage of Drag Racing competition was held in Boralday airport on June 18. Islam Dudayev became the winner in PRO 1 category. He drove 402 meters in 14.04 seconds. Salman Dudayev won in PRO 2 category with 13.447 seconds. Dmitriy Borovikov (PRO 3 category) covered the distance in 12.085 seconds.
