Tengrinews.kz - Thousands of drivers in Kazakhstan get behind the wheel every day, including many elderly citizens. But is there a legal age limit for driving? Tengrinews.kz looked into the issue.
Is there a maximum age for driving in Kazakhstan?
According to the police department, there is no upper age limit for driving in Kazakhstan – citizens can legally drive even at 80 or 90 years old. However, there are certain restrictions.
"In Kazakhstan, a person must be at least 18 years old to obtain a driver's license. At the same time, the law does not set an upper age limit. Nevertheless, older drivers may face certain restrictions related to their health, based on the conclusion of medical professionals during the license renewal process or during a retest," the police said.
What conditions prevent someone from driving?
If a driver has the following medical conditions, they will not be issued a license or may lose it during a routine medical examination:
Mental disorders
- Chronic mental illnesses with severe symptoms (schizophrenia, delusional disorders)
- Affective disorders (severe depression, bipolar disorder)
- Personality disorders (e.g., antisocial behavior)
- Intellectual disability
- Drug addiction and alcoholism (if remission is less than two years)
Neurological disorders
- Epilepsy
Vision problems
- Achromatopsia (inability to distinguish colors)
- Blindness in both eyes
