Tengrinews.kz - Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has proposed making road safety lessons a separate mandatory subject in the school curriculum.
At a briefing of the Central Communications Service, Kaisar Sultanbayev, Chairman of the Administrative Police Committee of the MIA, said that such classes could instill law-abiding behavior on the roads and improve traffic safety as children grow older and eventually become drivers themselves.
According to Sultanbayev, school patrol teams of young traffic inspectors are considered an effective tool in preventing child injuries on the roads.
“In many countries, involving schoolchildren in traffic safety has long become part of the educational and public culture. International experience shows that such initiatives reduce the risks of road injuries and foster a sense of civic responsibility in the younger generation,” Sultanbayev noted.
In the run-up to September 1, the ministry is also urging parents and teachers, together with police officers, to work out the safest route for each child from home to school and back.
“A child should always follow the same safest route to and from school, and must know it by heart,” the ministry stressed.
