Kazakhstan Prime-Minister Karim Massimov congratulated Christine Lagarde on her election to the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in his Twitter. “My congratulations to Christine Lagarde on her appointment as the new Managing Director of the IMF,” Prime-Minister tweeted. Lagarde became the first woman to head the IMF since its foundation in 1944. The main competitor of French Finance Minister in the election campaign for the IMF top job was head of Mexican Central Bank Agustin Carstens. Chairman of Kazakhstan National Bank Gregory Marchenko and South African Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel withdrew their candidacies. Marchenko explained his decision by saying that it is "more or less obvious" that the job will go to French Financial Minister Christine Lagarde. The previou head of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned after being accused of sexually assaulting a maid in a New York hotel.
