Man caught with suspicious stack of dollars detained in Atyrau

Tengrinews.kz - A suspect accused of distributing a large batch of counterfeit U.S. dollars has been detained in Atyrau, citing the press service of the Atyrau Region Police Department.

Officers from the department’s organized crime unit apprehended a 24-year-old man suspected of selling counterfeit $50 bills during an undercover operation.

A search of the suspect revealed 175 fake banknotes totaling $8,750.

"It has been established that the man was involved in importing and selling vehicles from abroad. Authorities are currently investigating the source of the counterfeit money and possible distribution channels. A criminal case has been initiated under charges related to the production, storage, or distribution of counterfeit foreign currency or securities," the police statement said.

A pre-trial investigation is underway. Further details have not been disclosed in the interest of the investigation.

Previously, the Financial Monitoring Agency of Kazakhstan reported a rise in cases of counterfeit foreign currency distribution.
