Tengrinews.kz – Kazhydromet has issued an air quality warning for residents of Astana and Almaty.
“On May 8, 2025, unfavorable meteorological conditions for air pollution are expected in the cities of Almaty and Astana,” the statement reads.
Unfavorable meteorological conditions are a combination of short-term weather factors — calm winds, light breezes, fog, and temperature inversions — that lead to the accumulation of harmful pollutants in the lower layer of the atmosphere.
An inversion is a weather phenomenon where warmer air traps colder air near the ground. Normally, the air near the surface rises and carries away pollutants. But during an inversion, the cold air becomes locked below, along with vehicle emissions, dust, and smoke, causing pollution to build up near the ground — especially in urban areas.
