Tengrinews.kz - The Ministry of Trade and Integration commented on the decision of US President Donald Trump to impose duties on imports from 185 countries, including Kazakhstan.
"A preliminary analysis of the new trade measures taken by the American side showed that a significant part of Kazakhstan's exports to the United States are not subject to additional tariffs, since they are included in the list of exceptions provided for by the regulations of the US administration," the Ministry of Trade said.
According to the Bureau of National Statistics, by the end of 2024, the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and the United States amounted to $4.2 billion, which is 4% higher than the previous year ($4.1 billion). Exports from Kazakhstan to the United States in 2024 increased by 30.6% and amounted to $2 billion. Imports of goods from the United States to Kazakhstan amounted to $2.2 billion.
The bulk of Kazakhstan's exports to the United States are crude oil, uranium, silver, ferroalloys, and others. These categories, which account for 92% of deliveries, are included in the list of exceptions provided for by the US President's decree "On the regulation of imports through reciprocal tariffs to eliminate trade practices that result in a significant and persistent deficit in the United States' trade in goods."
"Additional duties will apply to certain groups of goods, the export of which in 2024 amounted to 95.2 million dollars. These include phosphorus (in 2024, exports amounted to 15.9 million dollars), ferrosilicon ($12.7 million), lenses ($4.1 million), wheat gluten ($4 million), ammonium nitrate ($2.4 million). The introduced tariff measures will affect only 4.8% of the total volume of Kazakhstan's exports to the United States. The government is initiating consultations with the American side to discuss the possibility of not applying additional duties to Kazakhstan," the ministry noted.
It is noted that Kazakhstan has been a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for about 10 years and strictly adheres to its principles in the implementation of foreign trade policy.
"As part of bilateral cooperation with the United States, Kazakhstan ensures equal and non-discriminatory terms of trade in accordance with international obligations," the Ministry of Trade concluded.
On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of "mirror" duties on imports of goods from 185 countries. The duties will affect a number of former Soviet Union countries: for Moldova, they will be 31%, for Kazakhstan, 27%, for Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan - 10%. Russia, Belarus, Iran, Cuba, and North Korea were not on the list.
