Tengrinews.kz — The Bureau of National Statistics has calculated Kazakhstan's population as of May 1. The agency published on its ETA website website a spreadsheet with official statistical data.
As of May 1, the population of Kazakhstan stood at 20,562,993 people (compared to 20,547,909 on April 1). Since the beginning of the year, the population has increased by 63,171.
The majority of Kazakhstanis—13,153,726 people—reside in urban areas. The most populous metropolis remains Almaty, with a population of 2,362,463.
More than 1 million people lived in Astana (1,668,750 people) and in Shymkent (1,305,620 people).
The regions with populations exceeding one million are:
- Turkistan Region — 2,146,817 people;
- Almaty Region — 1,609,784 people;
- Zhambyl Region — 1,214,040 people;
- Karaganda Region — 1,131,090 people.
The least populated regions remain:
- Ulytau Region — 218,251 people;
- North Kazakhstan Region — 512,702 people;
- Abai Region — 593,892 people.
