According to the statistical data, Kazakhstan’s population reached 20,547,909 people as of April 1, 2026. Since the beginning of 2026, the country’s population has increased by 48,087 people.

The population has exceeded 2 million in both the Turkestan Region — 2,146,665 people (although the region’s population has decreased by 2,540 people since the start of the year) — and Almaty — 2,359,052 people (an increase of 10,949 people).

More than 1 million people live in:

  • Astana — 1,662,755;
  • Almaty Region — 1,606,365;
  • Shymkent — 1,302,868;
  • Zhambyl Region — 1,214,501;
  • Karaganda Region — 1,131,200.

The least populous regions are:

  • Ulytau Region — 218,420;
  • North Kazakhstan Region — 512,991;
  • Abai Region — 594,320.

As of April 1, 2026, 13,137,950 Kazakhstanis lived in urban areas (an increase of 52,840 people), while 7,409,959 Kazakhstanis lived in rural areas (a decrease of 4,753 people).
